Lined Valve Selection Guide: How to Choose the Right Type, Material & Size for Your Application
Selecting the wrong lined valve costs you unplanned shutdowns, chemical leaks, and wasted budget. This guide walks you through 6 critical selection steps — from valve type and lining material to size, pressure rating, industry fit, and compliance — so you can specify the right valve the first time.
Select the Right Lined Valve Type for Your Function
Lined valves come in 7 primary configurations, each engineered for a specific flow control function. Your first decision is whether you need on/off isolation, throttling control, or backflow prevention.
Valve Type Comparison
| Valve Type | Function | Flow Characteristic | Best For | Limitations | Size |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lined Plug Valve | On/Off isolation | Full bore, high Cv, low ΔP | Slurries, viscous media, high-flow chemical lines | Higher torque; not for fine throttling | DN15–DN400 |
| Lined Ball Valve | On/Off isolation | Full/reduced bore, bubble-tight | Gas service, high-purity, emergency shutoff | Cavity traps media; not for slurry | DN15–DN600 |
| Lined Butterfly Valve | On/Off & moderate throttle | High capacity, compact, low cost | Large pipelines, water treatment, general chemical | Disc in flow path; not for precise control | DN50–DN3000 |
| Lined Check Valve | Backflow prevention | Uni-directional, auto-closing | Pump discharge, gravity flow, acid dosing | Cannot isolate or throttle | DN15–DN600 |
| Lined Diaphragm Valve | Throttling & on/off | Excellent modulation, zero dead-leg | Slurries, abrasive media, pharma, food | Diaphragm is wear part; limited pressure | DN15–DN300 |
| Lined Gate Valve | On/Off isolation | Full bore, minimal ΔP when open | Main pipeline isolation, infrequent operation | Slow actuation; seat erosion risk | DN25–DN600 |
| Lined Globe Valve | Precision throttling | Excellent regulation, linear characteristic | Flow control, pressure regulation, dosing | Higher ΔP; higher cost | DN15–DN250 |

Choose the Right Lining Material — PTFE vs PFA vs FEP vs Rubber
The lining material determines your valve's chemical resistance, temperature range, purity level, and service life. Fluoropolymer linings (PTFE, PFA, FEP) handle the widest range of corrosive chemicals, while rubber linings offer advantages in abrasive or low-cost applications.
Lining Material Comparison
| Property | PTFE | PFA | FEP | PVDF | Rubber |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Temperature | -40 to +200°C | -40 to +260°C | -40 to +150°C | -30 to +150°C | -20 to +120°C |
| Chemical Resistance | Excellent — nearly universal | Excellent — nearly universal | Excellent | Good — weak to strong alkalis | Moderate |
| Permeation | Moderate (microporous) | Low (melt-processable, dense) | Low | Moderate | High |
| Purity | High | Ultra-high (FDA, semiconductor) | High | Medium | Low |
| Abrasion | Moderate | Good | Moderate | Good | Excellent |
| Cost | ★★☆☆ Medium | ★★★★ High | ★★★☆ Med-High | ★★☆☆ Medium | ★☆☆☆ Low |
| Best For | General chemical, chlor-alkali | Semiconductor, pharma, HF | Low-permeation moderate temp | Bromine, chlorinated solvents | Abrasive slurry, water treatment |

Determine the Correct Lined Valve Size — DN15 to DN600
Valve sizing directly impacts flow rate, pressure drop, and system efficiency. An oversized valve wastes budget; an undersized one creates excessive pressure drop.

Flow Coefficient (Cv/Kv) Sizing Guide
Step A: Determine required flow rate (Q) in m³/h or GPM.
Step B: Determine allowable pressure drop (ΔP) across the valve.
Step C: Calculate Kv = Q × √(SG / ΔP). Conversion: Cv = 1.156 × Kv.
Step D: Select a valve with rated Kv ≥ calculated value.
Match Pressure Rating & Temperature Range — PN6 to PN25 / Class 150–300
Every lined valve has a maximum working pressure that decreases as temperature rises. Verify that your operating conditions fall within the pressure-temperature envelope.
Pressure-Temperature Rating (PTFE Lining)
| Pressure Class | Max Pressure (bar) | Max Temp at Full Pressure | Max Temp Reduced Pressure | Flange Std |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PN6 | 6 | 150°C | 200°C at 3 bar | EN 1092-1 |
| PN10 | 10 | 150°C | 200°C at 5 bar | EN 1092-1 / GB/T 9113 |
| PN16 | 16 | 150°C | 200°C at 8 bar | EN 1092-1 / GB/T 9113 |
| PN25 | 25 | 120°C | 180°C at 10 bar | EN 1092-1 |
| Class 150 | 20 (≈290 psi) | 150°C | 200°C at 10 bar | ASME B16.5 |
| Class 300 | 50 (≈725 psi) | 120°C | 180°C at 25 bar | ASME B16.5 |
PFA-lined valves operate 20–60°C higher than PTFE at the same pressure. Contact YOUFUMI for exact PFA ratings.
Over-temperature: Running PTFE-lined valves above 180°C causes liner softening and seal failure.
Vacuum without reinforcement: Standard linings collapse under negative pressure. Specify vacuum-rated valves if below -0.06 MPa.
Thermal cycling: Rapid temperature swings cause metal/liner differential expansion and delamination.
