Lined Valve Selection Guide: How to Choose the Right Type, Material & Size for Your Application

Selecting the wrong lined valve costs you unplanned shutdowns, chemical leaks, and wasted budget. This guide walks you through 6 critical selection steps — from valve type and lining material to size, pressure rating, industry fit, and compliance — so you can specify the right valve the first time.

STEP 1

Select the Right Lined Valve Type for Your Function

Lined valves come in 7 primary configurations, each engineered for a specific flow control function. Your first decision is whether you need on/off isolation, throttling control, or backflow prevention.

Valve Type Comparison

STEP 2

Choose the Right Lining Material — PTFE vs PFA vs FEP vs Rubber

The lining material determines your valve's chemical resistance, temperature range, purity level, and service life. Fluoropolymer linings (PTFE, PFA, FEP) handle the widest range of corrosive chemicals, while rubber linings offer advantages in abrasive or low-cost applications.

💡 Engineer's Tip: For hydrofluoric acid (HF) or ultra-pure semiconductor chemicals, always specify PFA over PTFE. PFA's lower permeation rate prevents trace chemical migration through the liner, extending valve life 2–3× in HF service.
STEP 3

Determine the Correct Lined Valve Size — DN15 to DN600

Valve sizing directly impacts flow rate, pressure drop, and system efficiency. An oversized valve wastes budget; an undersized one creates excessive pressure drop.

Flow Coefficient (Cv/Kv) Sizing Guide

Step A: Determine required flow rate (Q) in m³/h or GPM.
Step B: Determine allowable pressure drop (ΔP) across the valve.
Step C: Calculate Kv = Q × √(SG / ΔP). Conversion: Cv = 1.156 × Kv.
Step D: Select a valve with rated Kv ≥ calculated value.

💡 Tip: Unsure about Cv calculation? Provide YOUFUMI with your flow rate, media properties, and pipeline pressure — our engineering team will size the valve free of charge.
STEP 4

Match Pressure Rating & Temperature Range — PN6 to PN25 / Class 150–300

Every lined valve has a maximum working pressure that decreases as temperature rises. Verify that your operating conditions fall within the pressure-temperature envelope.

Class 30050 (≈725 psi)120°C180°C at 25 barASME B16.5

PFA-lined valves operate 20–60°C higher than PTFE at the same pressure. Contact YOUFUMI for exact PFA ratings.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

Over-temperature: Running PTFE-lined valves above 180°C causes liner softening and seal failure.

Vacuum without reinforcement: Standard linings collapse under negative pressure. Specify vacuum-rated valves if below -0.06 MPa.

Thermal cycling: Rapid temperature swings cause metal/liner differential expansion and delamination.

FAQ

Lined Valve Selection FAQ

What is a lined valve and when should I use one?+
A lined valve is an industrial valve with an internal fluoropolymer or rubber barrier protecting the metal body from corrosive media. Use them for aggressive chemicals — HCl, H₂SO₄, NaOH, Cl₂ — in chemical processing, pharmaceutical, semiconductor, and water treatment applications.
PTFE vs PFA lined valve: which is better?+
PTFE handles nearly all chemicals up to 200°C at the lowest cost. PFA is better for higher temperatures (260°C), lower permeation (critical for HF), and FDA/semiconductor-grade purity. Choose PTFE for general chemical processing; PFA for semiconductor, pharma, or HF service.
What pressure rating can lined valves handle?+
PN6 to PN25 (metric) or ANSI Class 150 to 300. Maximum pressure depends on lining material, valve type, and temperature. Always check the manufacturer's P-T chart.
Can lined valves handle vacuum?+
Yes. Standard valves handle partial vacuum to -0.06 MPa. For full vacuum (-0.1 MPa), specify reinforced or mechanically locked linings to prevent collapse.
How do I select the right size?+
Match pipeline DN/NPS, calculate required Cv/Kv from flow rate and pressure drop, verify face-to-face dimensions. YOUFUMI provides free Cv calculations — just send us your flow data.
Lined plug valve vs ball valve?+
Plug valves: full-bore, higher Cv, better for slurry, field-adjustable sealing. Ball valves: bubble-tight shutoff, preferred for gas and high-purity service. Choose plug for liquid chemical, ball for gas or ultra-pure applications.
Are YOUFUMI valves ATEX/CE certified?+
Yes. ISO 9001, CE, and ATEX certified. Designed per ASME B16.34, API 598, ISO 5208. Download certificates from our certificate page.
Best lining for hydrofluoric acid (HF)?+
PFA. Its lower permeation rate prevents trace HF migration to the metal body. For concentrated HF at high temperatures, pair PFA with Height alloy or Monel body.
How often inspect or replace?+
Annual inspection for general service, every 6 months for severe conditions. Watch for increased torque, lining swelling, seat leakage. Properly selected YOUFUMI valves last 3–5 years.
Can lined valves throttle?+
Only globe valves and diaphragm valves are designed for throttling. Ball and butterfly valves should be on/off only — partial opening accelerates wear.
