Industrial fluid systems often face a dual-threat environment: aggressive chemical attack and relentless mechanical wear. While many engineers solve for corrosion using high-quality fluoropolymers, they frequently overlook the mechanical degradation caused by suspended solids.
At Youfumi, with over 35 years of experience and a 150,000 m² state-of-the-art facility, we have seen how improper specification leads to rapid liner failure. This article serves as a technical guide to valve erosion prevention, ensuring your flow control systems withstand the harshest abrasive conditions.
It is vital to distinguish between chemical corrosion and mechanical erosion. Corrosion is a chemical reaction where the media attacks the molecular structure of the valve material. Fluoropolymers like PTFE and PFA offer near-universal resistance to this. However, erosion is a physical process where high-velocity particles “sandblast” the surface.
In many smelting or chemical mining applications, the media is an abrasive slurry. While a PTFE lined butterfly valve is excellent at preventing chemical body attack, the soft nature of the plastic makes it susceptible to mechanical thinning. When erosion occurs, the protective barrier is physically stripped away, eventually exposing the metal substrate to the corrosive media.
Fluid velocity is the most significant driver of mechanical wear. As abrasive particles move through the reduced port of a valve, their kinetic energy increases. This creates a focused stream of particles that impacts the disc and seat area. Over time, this constant impingement creates “washouts” or grooves in the lining, compromising the valve’s ability to achieve a bubble-tight seal.
Cavitation in lined valves is a silent killer. It occurs when a fluid’s pressure drops below its vapor pressure, forming bubbles that violently collapse as pressure recovers. These micro-implosions generate shockwaves that can tear chunks out of soft PTFE or PFA liners. In slurry systems, the presence of solids often exacerbates this damage by providing nucleation sites for bubble formation.
Butterfly valves are often used for flow control, but throttling at low opening angles (below 30 degrees) creates extreme turbulence. This concentrated flow “jets” against the downstream side of the liner. At Youfumi, we recommend utilizing our “Wisdom Cloud Valley” digital factory data to ensure your valves are sized to operate in their optimal flow range.
To stop erosion, you must control fluid velocity by sizing the valve correctly for your flow rate. Additionally, using harder materials like UHMWPE or Ceramic for abrasive slurries, and avoiding throttling at very low opening angles, will prevent high-velocity “jetting” from destroying the soft fluoropolymer lining.
Effective valve erosion prevention requires a multi-layered approach starting at the design phase. By managing the energy of the fluid, you can significantly reduce the mechanical load on the internal components.
Proper valve sizing is the first line of defense. Selecting a valve that is too small increases velocity and wear. Conversely, an oversized valve will constantly operate in a near-closed position, leading to the “jetting” effect mentioned earlier. We provide comprehensive sizing support to ensure your Cv values match your project requirements.
In systems where large particles are present, installing a Youfumi lined strainer upstream can mitigate the “sandblasting” effect. By removing the largest abrasive solids, you protect the delicate sealing surfaces of the downstream valves. This simple addition can often triple the service life of a butterfly valve in phosphoric acid or smelting lines.
Piping geometry plays a massive role in flow stability. Installing a valve too close to a pump discharge or an elbow creates non-uniform velocity profiles. For abrasive media, we recommend a straight run of pipe (at least 5 to 10 pipe diameters) upstream of the valve to allow the flow to stabilize before it enters the valve bore.
While PTFE is the industry standard for chemical resistance, it is relatively soft. When dealing with abrasive slurry valves, a material upgrade is often necessary to handle the mechanical impact.
One common comparison is UHMWPE vs PTFE lining. UHMWPE (Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene) offers significantly higher abrasion resistance than PTFE, though it has a lower temperature limit (typically around 80°C to 90°C). It is an excellent choice for cold slurries in mining or wastewater treatment.
For extreme environments where both high temperature and extreme abrasion are present, Youfumi offers Ceramic-lined alternatives. Our ceramic ball and gate valves utilize zirconium or alumina liners that are nearly as hard as diamonds, making them the ultimate solution for smelting and coal chemical industries.

Regular inspection is vital to catch erosion before it leads to a catastrophic leak. At Youfumi, we utilize a comprehensive equipment inspection process with over 30 procedures, including high-voltage spark testing to detect microscopic thinning of the liner.
Field engineers should perform periodic ultrasonic gauging to monitor liner thickness. If a specific pattern of erosion is detected on the downstream side, it often indicates an issue with piping alignment or improper throttling. By identifying these patterns early, you can adjust your operational parameters or implement protective coatings before the valve fails.
Preventing erosion is a balance of chemistry, physics, and engineering.
