PSI is used when total pressure matters, such as in systems requiring absolute pressure, including vacuum systems. 

PSIG is used when only the pressure difference from atmospheric levels is important, like in gas pipelines and tire pressure measurement.

PSI readings include atmospheric pressure, while PSIG readings exclude it. 

For instance, a 50 PSI reading represents the total pressure, including atmospheric pressure, while 50 PSIG indicates the pressure is 50 PSI above the surrounding atmospheric pressure.

For example, a pressure gauge on a pump that reads 50 PSIG means the internal pressure is 50 PSI above the atmospheric pressure, not including the 14.7 PSI of atmospheric pressure.
