How to Specify a PTFE Lined Sight Glass for Chemical Pipelines?

By ROY XU September 15,2026

Quick answer: A PTFE lined sight glass specification should include the nominal size, pressure class, operating and design temperatures, and lining thickness requirement. You also need to identify the process chemical and its concentration so the lining, glass, and seals can be checked for compatibility. Specify any vacuum conditions separately.

What Are the Four Basic Specs for a PTFE Lined Sight Glass?

The mechanical specification of a PTFE lined sight glass is established by four core details:

  • Nominal size
  • Pressure class
  • Temperature
  • Lining thickness

Nominal size identifies the pipeline connection, such as DN50 or DN100. Make sure to use the actual connecting pipework rather than inferring the size from another component in the line.

For pressure class, you may be working with PN10, PN16, or ASME Class 150. These are rating designations and should be treated as such. For example, you should not read PN16 as permission to operate at 16 bar continuously. The construction and temperature of the sight glass can cause the allowable pressure to change.

Temperature needs a little more information than a single maximum figure. Give the normal operating temperature and design temperature when both are known. In case the process can run temporarily hotter, include the maximum operating temperature in the spec. The manufacturer can then check the complete assembly, not only the fluoropolymer liner.

Your project requirements may already have defined the lining thickness. If they haven’t, ask what the manufacturer offers for the chosen item. Some manufacturers provide a 3 mm minimum or a 3–5 mm range, but these are not universal requirements and should not be copied from another item’s datasheet.

There is one more piece of information the four mechanical specs cannot cover: the chemical itself. You’ll want to name it and mention its concentration rather than just describing the medium as a corrosive liquid. As PFA, FEP, and PTFE are separate fluoropolymers, you should not substitute one for another without considering the service conditions.

YOUFUMI’s horizontal sight glass, for example, comes in DN15–DN200 with PN10, PN16, and 150LB pressure classes. Its published lining options are PFA and FEP rather than PTFE.

When Does Full-View vs Double-Window Matter?

Full-view, tubular, and tube-type generally describe the same configuration. A broad view around the flow path is offered by a cylindrical glass section. If you want a line of sight through opposing windows in a body instead, a bull’s-eye (or double-window) sight glass makes more sense.

A full-view design lets operators observe the fluid around the circumference of the flow path rather than through two fixed openings. This wider viewing area is useful when checking visible changes in flow. It can make changes in clarity and color easier to observe from varying positions, along with any bubbles.

The observation is restricted to window openings in the case of a double-window design. Rather than using a cylindrical glass section as the main viewing area, its glass panes are attached to viewing ports in the body.

But this construction difference shouldn’t be considered a universal pressure rule. Although some tubular items have lower published pressure limits than some double-window items, the allowable pressure depends on the nominal size and specific design. Temperature can affect the allowable pressure as well.

YOUFUMI’s horizontal sight glass uses borosilicate glass with PFA or FEP lining. Its product page lists DIN 3202 face-to-face dimensions. It does not publish an operating temperature range or a pressure-temperature curve, so those limits should be confirmed for the intended service rather than inferred from the PN or 150LB designation.

How Should You Specify the Lining, Glass, and Gaskets?

Specifying a corrosion resistant sight glass means checking the complete wetted assembly. A fluoropolymer liner may resist the process chemical even when the glass or sealing material does not.

Borosilicate glass is resistant to many chemicals, but hydrofluoric acid can attack it. Certain hot, concentrated alkaline solutions can attack it as well. A PTFE sight glass therefore needs a separate check of the viewing material before it is specified for these services.

You must also pay similar attention to seals. As their location and exposure depend on the construction of the sight flow indicator, you need to check the seal material against the actual chemical where it comes into contact with the process. Do not assume the fluoropolymer lining isolates every seal from the medium.

The specification should also explicitly mention any vacuum conditions. Differential pressure can pull an inadequately supported fluoropolymer liner away from the body wall, causing inward deformation or collapse. Because lined-component producers use varying techniques to secure their liners, you need to confirm vacuum suitability for your specific product.

Lining thickness should not be treated as a simple “thicker is better” decision either. The lining provides a corrosion and permeation barrier between the medium and the underlying body. Its suitability also depends on the fluoropolymer used and how the liner is constructed. Use the project minimum where one exists; otherwise, confirm the available thickness with the manufacturer.

What Should the One-Line Sight Glass Specification Include?

A usable RFQ line should combine the mechanical requirements with the actual process conditions. Unknown values can be marked for manufacturer confirmation instead of being filled with assumptions.

Why “PTFE lined” alone is not enough

The template deliberately separates the lining material from the process medium. Writing “PTFE lined” without identifying the chemical and concentration does not establish whether the complete sight glass is suitable — lining and medium are always reviewed together, at the stated temperature.
