A Hastelloy ball valve takes a different approach. Instead of relying on a lining, the primary wetted components are manufactured from Hastelloy, a high-performance alloy known for its exceptional resistance to corrosion and high temperatures, even in highly aggressive chemical environments.

Year 1: Buying the Valve

The first-year investment includes both valve purchase and installation—often referred to as the upfront cost.

At this stage, fluoropolymer-lined plug designs usually appear more economical. Their bodies can be made from standard carbon steel or ductile iron, with corrosion protection provided by the internal lining, resulting in a lower initial price.

Year 2 to 4: Keeping Things Running

Once operations begin, Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) becomes the key metric. TCO accounts for maintenance, energy consumption, repairs, and downtime—not just purchase price.

Fluoropolymer-lined plug valves provide excellent sealing performance due to their large contact surface. However, operating torque can be higher, sometimes requiring larger actuators. Over time, abrasive particles in the process media may damage the lining. If liner integrity is compromised, corrosive fluids can attack the metal body, leading to repair or replacement.

Hastelloy ball valves typically operate with lower torque and can often use smaller actuators. Their solid-metal construction resists abrasion more effectively and eliminates concerns related to liner separation or collapse.

Year 5: The Final Count

By Year 5, the full lifecycle picture becomes clear.

In clean chemical services without suspended solids, lined plug valves may remain in good condition, delivering strong value thanks to their lower upfront cost and limited maintenance requirements.

However, in applications involving highly corrosive media or abrasive particles, lined valves may require relining—or complete replacement—by Years 3 or 4.

Valve replacement introduces both material costs and production losses due to downtime, which can be substantial.

In many such cases, Hastelloy ball valves—despite their higher initial investment—continue operating reliably through Year 5 with minimal intervention. When repair labor and downtime are included, the higher-cost option may ultimately deliver better overall economics.

Which One Should You Choose?

TCO analysis shows there is no universal solution—it depends on operating conditions.

Consider fluoropolymer-lined plug designs if:

  • Initial budget is a primary concern
  • Process media is clean and non-abrasive
  • Tight shutoff performance is required

Consider Hastelloy ball valves if:

  • Long-term reliability outweighs upfront cost
  • Process media is hot, abrasive, or extremely corrosive
  • Low operating torque and minimal maintenance are priorities
