PFA vs PTFE Lined Valve — Engineering Selection Guide
Use the table below to confirm lining material against your process fluid, temperature, purity class, and vacuum requirements. Applies to all valve types: plug, ball, butterfly, gate, globe, and check.
| Selection Criteria | PFA Lined Valve | PTFE Lined Valve |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical resistance | Superior: HF, wet chlorine, strong oxidizers, halogenated organics | Good: dilute acids, alkalis, general corrosive fluids |
| Permeation resistance | Excellent (low permeation rate) | Moderate — permeation increases at elevated temperature |
| Max service temperature | Up to ~180°C (media & lining thickness dependent) | Typically ≤150°C for lined valve service |
| Purity / cleanliness | High-purity grade; suitable for semiconductor & pharma | Standard grade; not recommended for critical purity processes |
| Vacuum service | Supported (vacuum-rated designs available) | Limited — risk of liner collapse under full vacuum |
| Lining flexibility / creep | High — fewer cold-flow limitations under sustained load | Moderate — susceptible to creep under sustained load |
| Typical industries | Semiconductor, fluorochemicals, electronic chemicals, HF alkylation | General chemical processing, chlor-alkali, water treatment |
| Cost relative | Higher unit cost; lower lifecycle cost in severe service | Lower upfront cost; suitable for moderate corrosion duty |
Specify PFA Lined Valve when:
- Process fluid includes HF, wet chlorine, concentrated H&sub2;SO&sub4;, or aggressive halogenated organics
- Application is in semiconductor wet-bench, electronic chemical delivery, or pharmaceutical high-purity lines
- Low permeation and minimal ionic contamination are process requirements
- Service involves vacuum conditions or sustained temperatures above 150°C
- Fugitive emissions compliance or tight environmental leak specifications apply
PTFE Lined Valve remains a sound choice when:
- Process fluid is a dilute acid, alkali, or moderately corrosive solution
- Operating temperature and pressure are within standard PTFE liner limits
- Purity requirements do not demand fluoropolymer-grade cleanliness
- Budget is a primary constraint and service conditions are well within PTFE capability
